Wednesday, USAG William Barr said that he believes "spying did occur" on Donald Trump's Presidential campaign, suggesting the origins of the Russian Federation investigation may have been mishandled and aligning himself with the President on the matter.
"I am going to be reviewing both the genesis and the conduct of intelligence activities directed at the Trump campaign during 2016", Barr said Wednesday.
The Justice Department, Barr said, is "operating under my general guidance that I'm accepting the Cole Memorandum for now, but I've generally left it up to the U.S. Attorneys in each state to determine what the best approach is".
The investigation that will reportedly be carried out by Barr's newly-formed team comes atop the existing DOJ Inspector General investigation into the origins of the counterintelligence probe, which Barr has said should be completed as early as May or June.
The attorney general appeared before a House appropriations subcommittee to discuss his department's budget request - normally a sleepy affair - but Democrats, in particular, were more interested in asking questions about the report.
Here is an explanation of the four categories of information that Barr has said will be redacted.
"Once we get those comments, we'll be able to work with you on any concerns about (the bill)", he said in response to questions asked by Sen. But one of the things I want to do is pull together all the information from the various investigations that have gone on, including on the Hill and in the Department and see if there are any remaining questions to be addressed, ' he said.

While his term was meant to expire in 2009, Abbas has remained in office in the absence of elections since the Fatah-Hamas split. Two factions of Abbas's Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) refused to take part in Shtayyeh's government.
I am not saying that improper surveillance occurred; I'm saying that I am concerned about it and looking into it, that's all. "Although the President would have the right to assert privilege over certain parts of the report", Barr wrote in that letter, "he has stated publicly that he intends to defer to me and, accordingly, there are no plans to submit the report to the White House for a privilege review". "The term "spying" has all kinds of negative connotations and I have to believe he chose that term deliberately". "AG Barr must retract his statement immediately or produce specific evidence to back it up". What exactly did the attorney general say?
Spying on the Trump campaign certainly occurred. "And I am not talking about the Federal Bureau of Investigation necessarily, but intelligence agencies more broadly".
President Donald Trump seemed gratified Thursday that his attorney general has endorsed a key talking point of the president's supporters: that there was spying on Trump's 2016 campaign.
BARR: Is that more appropriate in your mind? What they did was against our Constitution and everything we stand for, ' Trump said.
