Arrested After 5-Year-Old Child Thrown From 3rd Floor At MOA

16 April 2019

Police do not think there is any relationship between the man and the child or the child's family. "Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge, '" Brian Johnson told WCCO.

A child was rushed to a hospital Friday morning after reportedly being thrown from a balcony at the Mall of America, and one person has been taken into custody. Aranda also was accused of walking into a mall store and sweeping his hand across a display table, breaking glasses. The complaint says Aranda approached a woman who was waiting for the restaurant to open and asked her to buy him something.

Mall patrons and police officers performed life-saving measures on the boy, Potts said.

Police said in a later statement that the child's injuries were life-threatening.

"We don't believe that there is a threat to the public at this point as the suspect has been located", he said, adding that the incident appeared to be isolated. Bloomington Police is investigating the incident. Police officers responded to a report of a child falling over a third-floor railing, but soon learned the child had been "pushed or thrown", Potts said.

Aranda is being held on suspicion of attempted homicide, and police expect to submit the case to prosecutors in support of charges by noon Monday, Potts said.

Measles Count Down In Michigan, Vaccines Still Urged
Kiwis travelling to Hong Kong on an Air NZ flight earlier this month have been warned they were exposed to measles. Unvaccinated children will not be allowed to attend school, and their parents may face steep fines.

He's now at the Bloomington Police Department, Potts said, and authorities don't believe there is any further threat to the public.

Court records list the man's recent residences as the Salvation Army's Harbor Light Center in Minneapolis, a homeless shelter, and Pursuit Hometel, a group home on Park Avenue that serves adult men with disabilities. He had an outstanding warrant for his arrest at the time he allegedly assaulted the boy at the Mall of America.

Bloomington Police reported that the victim was 5 years old.

'The child did suffer significant injuries, ' he said.

At 10:17 a.m., police were called to the southeast corner of the mall for a child who had fallen and landed on the first floor.

Investigators are working with mall officials to determine if there was video, Potts said. Following that incident, he was convicted of obstructing a legal process by interfering with a police officer.
