Australian gov't approves controversial Carmichael coal mine's groundwater management plans

"India's Adani Enterprises has stepped closer to construction of a thermal coal mine in the Australian state of Queensland after Australia's environment minister said on Tuesday it had approved a groundwater management plan".

She said the project "has been subject to the most rigorous approval process of any mining project in Australia".

"I am very concerned that Barnaby Joyce's and Matt Canavan's political campaign reeks of political interference, and may have compromised the integrity of the decision making process", Queensland Minister, Leeanne Enoch, said.

Nine plans still require either federal or state government approvals.

Price insisted the approval was made on scientific grounds with input from the CSIRO and Geoscience Australia.

Ms Landry stressed the decision does not mean everything is now signed off and said it was now back to the State Government (see above).

However, Price added that the project "must meet further stringent conditions of approval from the Commonwealth before it can begin producing coal".

Mr Morrison, who is expected to soon announce a resolution to the conflict dividing the Coalition, said the ultimate decision would be based on scientific advice, not the threats issued by Queensland Liberal-National Party power broker James McGrath.

She said the company had accepted a number of actions including better monitoring of the Doongmabulla Springs, tighter corrective action triggers if there are any groundwater impacts and more scientific modelling within two years of the start of mining.

"The independent evaluation and endorsement by CSIRO and Geoscience Australia verify that the measures outlined in the plans will ensure groundwater at the mine, and the ecosystems that depend on it, are protected", said Dow in a statement.

Yesterday's announcement came after Queensland LNP MPs heavily lobbied the government amid pressure from Victorian MPs in particular who are under pressure from anti-Adani constituents in their own electorates.

The federal government is not providing any financial support to the mine or to its rail project, she said.

The final federal approval for the Adani coal mine has been given and now it's up to the Queensland government to decide if construction can start.

These are the groundwater plan and another to manage the tiny and endangered black-throated finch.

It will tell residents it wants the Queensland government to get the project up and going so it can deliver thousands of jobs.
