Many shot and killed at NZ mosque

Bangladesh's cricket team escaped unscathed after a deadly shooting at a mosque in New Zealand, an official told AFP on Friday.

Police have confirmed they are responding to a "critical incident".

Police placed all of the city's schools on lockdown amid the incident. calling a "serious ongoing firearms incident".

New Zealand Police have stormed the area and are urging anyone in the area to stay indoors.

Armed police in New Zealand swarmed central Christchurch Friday amid a shooting at a mosque in the South Island city.

Len Peneha, a witness to the incident, said he saw a man who was dressed in black walk into the Masjid Al Noor mosque.

Local media said multiple people were killed in the incident.

Much of Christchurch is in lockdown.

Radio New Zealand quoted a witness inside the mosque saying he heard shots fired and at least four people were lying on the ground and "there was blood everywhere".

According to a report, a gunman reportedly opened fire at the mosque around 11.40am (AEDT).

The Bangladesh team were able to return to Hagley Oval, where Saturday's third Test was scheduled to take place. There were reports of armed police at a second mosque in the suburb of Linwood.

"I've lived next door to this mosque for about five years and the people are great, they're very friendly", he said.

"Police believe there may be other offenders", the New Zealand Police tweeted. I'm speaking from experience, I'm speaking from what I've heard.

It has been reported that up to 500 people were in the mosque at the time. "I ran behind the mosque", he said.

Mario Villavarayen, strength and conditioning coach of the Bangladesh cricket team said the players were shaken up, but fine.
