Rep. Adam Schiff: ‘It’s a mistake’ for Mueller not to subpoena Trump

Trump is returning from a trip to Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Fla.

The question was brought up in the wake of Michael Cohen's most recent testimony before Congress, and questions over whether Cohen is being entirely truthful.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the team he assembled to investigate U.S. President Donald Trump and his associates have been funded through the end of September 2019, three U.S. officials said on Monday, an indication that the probe has funding to keep it going for months if need be.

Trump's lawyers have suggested that the president won't be sitting down with Mueller to answer questions beyond written responses to some queries that were submitted in November.

Meanwhile, Michael Avenatti, who became famous as the lawyer for Stormy Daniels, said he no longer represents the porn actress who alleged she had an affair with Trump. Trump also plays a central role in a separate case in NY, where prosecutors have implicated him in a crime.

Schiff concluded by attempting to turn Trump's own words against him, arguing that the "best way to get the truth would be to put the president under oath, because as he's made plain in the past he feels it's perfectly fine to lie to the public". NY prosecutors also are looking into Trump's inaugural fund.

Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler told ABC's "This Week" the panel wanted to get documents from the Department of Justice, the president's son Donald Trump Jr. and Trump Organization chief financial officer Alan Weisselberg, among others.

Mueller's probe into whether or not Vladimir Putin and the Russians coordinated with the 2016 Trump campaign began in May 2017.

There is evidence that some people in Trump's orbit were discussing a possible email dump from WikiLeaks before it occurred. Investigators have examined key episodes such as Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey and Trump's fury over Attorney General Jeff Sessions' recusal.

Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation, and derided Mueller's investigation as a witch hunt.

Schiff also spoke about impeachment the day after Pelosi said it was "not worth" impeaching Trump.

Schiff also said he believes Mueller was constrained by former acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, who he said was "appointed because he would be hostile to a subpoena on the president" and current Attorney General William Barr "who was chosen for the same hostility to his investigation". But he gave no specific timetable.
