49ers, Chiefs agree to terms on Dee Ford deal

13 March 2019

They dealt their second-round pick in 2020 to the Kansas City Chiefs for edge rusher Dee Ford, then gave Ford a five-year, $87.5 million contract extension, according to published reports.

When this deal becomes official - which can not occur until after 3 p.m. CT Wednesday at the earliest - Ford's contract is expected to be for five years and $87.5 million, according to ESPN's Josina Anderson. He missed 10 games the next season due to a back injury.

With the firing of defensive coordinator Bob Sutton and subsequent hiring of Steve Spagnuolo, the Chiefs are moving from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3 under the new regime.

The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Ford last week, but they did so with the intention of looking for a trade partner for the 27-year-old linebacker. Ford, who will turn 28 on March 19, also was selected to play in the Pro Bowl for the first time. Their leading edge rusher was Cassius Marsh, who recorded 5.5 sacks in 2018.

Giants trade Odell Beckham to Browns in shocker
This trade included the Giants getting guard Kevin Zeitler , who they actually received via the Olivier Vernon trade last Friday. The Giants finished 2018 with a 5-11 record and missed the playoffs for a second straight season.

The former Chief thrives in a 3-4 role as a pass rusher and will get that chance with the 49ers.

In coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch two years in charge, the 49ers have lost a whopping 11 one-possession games. While his 2018 season was a big one, it was also only the second time he'd posted more than four sacks in his five seasons with the Chiefs. Obviously San Francisco believes Ford won't have a problem adjusting from a 3-4 defense.

Armed with the No. 2 pick in April's draft, the Niners could still be in prime position to land another difference-making edge rusher such as Ohio State's Nick Bosa. "When you have them, they can be a difference-maker". They're going to be playing with a quick trigger and getting after it. It seems the 49ers deemed the No. 36 overall pick in this year's draft too high of a price.
