Paul Scholes appointed new Oldham Athletic manager

Pete Wild had been installed as manager on an interim basis following the sacking on Frankie Bunn on December 27, and masterminded a 2-1 victory away at Premier League Fulham in the FA Cup third round.

Paul Scholes is the latest member of Manchester United's "Class of 92" to become a manager.

Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam said: "Paul has won everything there is to win in football".

Scholes' first match in charge will see his new side host Yeovil Town on February 12 as they look to bridge the nine-point gap to thos now in the League Two play-off places. He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see. "But now I feel, I hope, the time is right to give it a go and hopefully we can be successful together".

EFL, Paul Scholes and the two clubs arrived at an agreement on Friday where the English football pundit will be forbidden fr signing players from Salford.

However, an English Football League meeting held on Friday confirmed that he was cleared of any such conflict of interest, and could take over the management of the Latics. "But it's fantastic to have Scholesy back in the game because he was a fantastic player to play with, a great personality".

His brother Phil Neville is the England women's team manager, having previously worked as a coach at Valencia.

"I'm close to Nicky (Butt, United's head of academy) and the people at United, if they can help me I'm sure they will".
