Barron County, Wisconsin, Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said Saturday on that he had been waiting for "relief" during all 88 days of 13-year-old Jayme Closs' disappearance.
Patterson, who was unemployed, has no criminal record, the Barron county sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said.
"I know all of you are searching for the answer why any of this happened", Fitzgerald said.
Patterson went to the Closs home outside Barron, Wisconsin, with the intention of taking Jayme, Fitzgerald said. They said there is nothing to indicate that he knew or had contact with the family before the incident, and said they do not know how he came to fixate on Jayme.
He worked for a day in 2016 for the Jennie-O turkey plant in Barron before he quit, saying he was moving out of the area, according to Jennie-O President Steve Lykken.
Neighbor Daphne Ronning told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Patterson's parents moved to Gordon about 15 years ago.
"Jayme is the hero in this case, there's no question about it", he said.
While authorities are still trying to determine the motive behind the kidnapping, more details about Patterson have emerged.
The grandfather of a United States girl who was abducted during a home invasion that left her parents dead says the family has no connection to the suspect and doesn't understand why he targeted her, deepening a mystery that has captivated the nation. Jayme was nowhere to be found. Police are still investigating and say 'she is doing as well as circumstances allow'. A 911 call was placed from Denise Closs's cell phone.
Thirteen-year-old Jayme Closs was reunited with her aunt and dog on Friday afternoon, posing for a picture her aunt shared on the "Healing for Jayme Closs" Facebook page. The FBI offered a cash reward for information on her whereabouts, and authorities urged hunters in the area to be on the lookout for clues.
The search for Jayme shows the power of collaboration between law enforcement, media and the public.
Winter Storm WARNING expanded, in effect until 9 p.m.
Saturday night's snow is warm overrunning cold, with light, dry snow and will take some time to moisten up the atmosphere. The snow should begin to taper off early Sunday morning, leaving behind a coating to an inch for most of Philadelphia.
Jayme told one of the neighbors in Gordon who took her in that she had walked away from a cabin where she had been held captive.
They went to a nearby house and pounded on the door with Jeanne shouting 'This is Jayme Closs!
Residents who knew Patterson described him as quiet.
"She said that this person's name was Jake Patterson, "he killed my parents and took me", said another neighbour, Kristin Kasinskas.
"I was elected to keep people safe and not having that unknown out there", Fitzgerald said on Fox & Friends. While the world may wonder what she went through in captivity, typically if a minor has suffered abuse their identities are kept private.
When they arrived, Kasinskas fed Jayme while they waited around half an hour for the police to arrive, Kasinskas told MPR.
They found Patterson in his vehicle, "driving around", apparently out looking for her, Fitzgerald said.
Patterson was not at home when Jayme escaped, the sheriff added.
Jayme was taken to a hospital in Minnesota after she was found, her aunt, Sue Allard, said.
"She is doing great", Fitzgerald told CNN's "Anderson Cooper Full Circle".
Both Jayme and the suspect have made initial comments to authorities, he said.
