Steve Smith Set to Undergo Surgery to Fix Injured Elbow

14 January 2019

Smith and Warner have played Sydney grade cricket during their bans, as well as appeared in the Global T20 Canada and Caribbean Premier League.

Smith will now undergo surgery and is expected to wear a brace for six weeks before commencing rehabilitation which has ruled him out from Pakistan Super League, which will be played from February 14 to March 17 as the former Australian captain is not expected to regain full fitness in this period.

When Smith will actually return to cricket is unclear at this stage, with Cricket Australia confirming on Saturday the dumped batsman would spent an extended time on the sidelines after injuring his elbow during the Bangladesh Premier League. His ban is scheduled to get over in March but it remains to be seen how soon he can return to competitive cricket after his surgery. After the two games, Smith had to pull out to tend to his shoulder.

Australia recently lost a first ever home Test series against India.

Smith was banned along with David Warner for a year and Cameron Bancroft, who was suspended for nine months, after the controversy in South Africa.

Smith, in a recent interview, had made some explosive revelations.

That will take him up to the end of his ban on March 28 after which Australia were hoping to bring him back into the one-day worldwide and test teams ahead of the limited overs World Cup and Ashes series. "We have a talented team and I am confident that they will do very well".

"I was looking forward to playing the tournament and help my team win the trophy".
