Man City boss Guardiola: January market can be good opportunity

14 January 2019

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City have their financial limits in the transfer market, even when trying to solve the dilemma of a replacement for Fernandinho.

"It involves playing with two holding midfielders - not just one - but he's an excellent player". Normally when you are humble you are going to lose.

Guardiola has been asked numerous times if City might try to add to the squad during this month's transfer window but he remains adamant that will not happen.

City have struggled to cope when they have been without Fernandinho in that position, losing both the Premier League games he missed, but the Brazilian will be 34 when next season kicks off.

But Guardiola knows Wolves will present a stiff test at the Etihad Stadium after making an impressive return to the top flight under Nuno Espirito Santo. "He'll be 34 and he can not play every few days".

"A month ago, I started reading 'Ruben Neves, £100m.' That is not going to happen, we are not going to pay £100m for a holding midfielder".

"Our wage, salary for the player is eighth, ninth or 10th in Europe, so there are eight or nine clubs where the wages are higher than what Manchester City pay". But sometimes it doesn't depend on us, you have to pay the club, pay the family and talk with the players, and with the agents, it's nuts.

"We try to be stable".

"That is why we did it but we can not do it every season". When we spent a lot two seasons ago, it was because the team was old - it was 30-31 years old and that's why we did it.

"We realised [how good they were] when we played them in the EFL Cup last season and again early this season", the former Barcelona boss told a pre-match news conference, having overseen a penalty shoot-out triumph in the former game before his team were held 1-1 at Molineux in August. "[But] I know the players are quality after three seasons and what exactly they can give us until the end of the season".

"The transfer window is the same in the summer, maybe shorter but it's a chance for the clubs to do something for new players and those who want to leave", he said.

"If you don't have injuries and are satisfied with the squad, you go with them".
