For months they had been praying Jayme was safe and would return home to her friends and family.
Jake Patterson had, as it turns out, worked at the same turkey processing plant, but only for a single day three years ago.
Barron county sheriff Chris Fitzgerald told reporters Patterson took measures to avoid leaving evidence at the Closs family's home, including shaving his head before breaking in. Authorities say Patterson acted alone.
The adults knew Closs's accused captor also is believed to have killed the girl's parents - so they weren't about to take any chances, they said.
Peter and Kristin Kasinskas, who helped rescue Closs, described the girl as "dirty", "thin" and "really exhausted and run down" after she escaped the hell house Thursday.
Shortly before 1 a.m. that night, 911 dispatchers got a call during which they could hear yelling, but no one talked to the dispatcher. When the dispatcher called back, a voicemail greeting indicated the phone belonged to Denise Closs, the dispatch log reads.
For months, thousands of people joined search parties as investigators received thousands of tips.
On Thursday, Jayme fled the cabin near the small town of Gordon where she said she had been imprisoned. "I don't know much about them besides being warned about them being troublemakers".
Police officers arrested 21-year-old Jake Thomas Patterson minutes later based on Jayme's description of his vehicle.

She was the first woman attorney general of California and first African American to occupy that position. Colbert addressed reports that Harris plans to announce a presidential run on Martin Luther King Jr.
"This is the nightmare case that we all, as parents, family members ... dread", FBI Special Agent Justin Tolomeo said.
Patterson was being held Saturday in Barron County's jail on preliminary charges of intentional homicide and kidnapping.
Wearing an oversized shirt and shoes that were too big for her, she described a girl who seemed like she'd grabbed at whatever she could to make her escape, trying to survive as she ran through the icy wilderness.
Although Jayme had disappeared, investigators said they initially "keyed in" on the parents because the daughter was an innocent child who they didn't believe could be targeted.
"Now it's about getting him the harshest sentence possible", Jayme's aunt Kelly Engelhart said. "She did not go into detail about how she got out of the house or anything like that".
"It was great to know she was next to me all night", and "what a great feeling to have her home", Smith's post reads.
Patterson used to live at the cabin with his father and brother, but his dad transferred ownership to Superior Choice Credit Union on October 23 - eight days after the abduction.
Her hair "was like a big dreadlock - like she'd been laying down", Kristin told The Post at her Wisconsin home. We don't know if he's coming here, ' " Peter said.
