A BuzzFeed News investigation published Thursday alleges Kolfage "spent more than a decade carefully crafting his public persona as an altruistic, conservative public figure", but quoted some people who had worked with him that, "he can be vengeful and malicious, and that the pursuit of profits above all else fueled his behavior".
"Eight days before Christmas I started this GoFundMe campaign because I was exhausted of watching the US government's inability to secure our southern border", he posted.
Trump is demanding $5 billion in funding to build the border wall due to what he calls a crisis of drugs and crime.
But Kolfage also announced on Friday he was suddenly stepping back from donating the money straight to the USA government - a promise it wasn't exactly clear he could complete - and instead funneling the money to a new nonprofit he started called "We Build the Wall, Inc".
Kolfage writes that members of the organization "have provided us with critical guidance on the legal, engineering, contracting, environmental, accounting, maintenance and real estate issues required to build a wall on the southern border".
But donations slowed and Kolfage said the group had concluded that the government won't be able to make use of them in the foreseeable future.

There's no definitive cause of these fast radio bursts and it's unclear what caused multiple FRBs from the same location. While interesting, these new observations, he said, can not tell us about the nature of these sources-at least not yet.
From the outset, there were doubts over whether donations could be specifically earmarked specifically for a wall as financial gifts for the United States Funds are set aside by Congress for general use and 'budget needs'. Since it's Congress that Trump is battling in order to get his long-promised border wall funded, it's hard to imagine that they would grant that appropriation for this particular campaign. "We will promptly refund your donation unless you tell us you approve our new plan for action". "This means all donors will receive a refund".
"As a veteran who has given so much, three limbs, I feel deeply invested to this nation to ensure future generations have everything we have today", Kolfage, an Iraq War veteran, said in a December 2018 statement announcing the online donation regime.
The problem is Kolfage had already launched his campaign and GoFundMe forbids changing where donated funds will go.
Anyone who doesn't do this within 90 days will automatically receive a refund.
At the end of his statement, Kolfage acknowledge the refund.
Whithorne said all donors will be contacted by GoFundMe via email.
For this reason, Kolfage says that he has now established a 501 (c)(4) non-profit organization named "We Build the Wall, Inc".
