The family, however, alleged that the girl was raped before being brutally killed.
In Bihar, the girl's family had claimed she was raped and murdered and that police had been slow in searching for her since she was reported missing on 28 December. Though officials are reluctant to go on record, sources say that the honour killing angle cannot be ruled out for several reasons including delayed information given to the police and recovery of the body not far away from the victim's house. She was last seen at a different location and her body was found at another different location. The victim's three sisters - one elder and two younger - also did not turn up to answer questions when a woman police officer of the special investigation team (SIT) called them.

According to the protesters, the body of the teenager was found on January 6. "She was possibly kidnapped on her way home". When we first tried to meet the girl's family, we were not allowed. They then informed the cops that she returned home on December 31. "Conflicting statements of the victim's family raised suspicions of foul play and we suspected their role in the killing... initially it was suspected to be a case of rape and murder... but we are yet to receive her autopsy report", another district police official said. "The family is allegedly in police custody and the police are trying to give this an honour killing angle", she said. She was also working alongside to support her family financially.
Hundreds strong crowds led candle light marches in Gaya on Tuesday and Wednesday, demanding a fair and speedy investigation into the matter. Activists in the locality claim that schools, factories and weavers shut down their operations on January 9 as a symbol of their protest.
