Gourmet candy recalled over hepatitis-A concerns

The warning tells consumers not to eat Bauer's Candies, Modjeskis, which are individually wrapped marshmallow candies dipped in chocolate or caramel.

The FDA released a warning stating that Bauer's sweets products could be contaminated with hepatitis A.

Certain sweets made by a company in Kentucky could be contaminated with hepatitis A, a highly contagious infection that typically affects the liver, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a recent warning to consumers.

Consumers and retailers should throw away any chocolate or caramel Modjeskas purchased after November 14.

At this time, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are not aware of any cases of hepatitis A related to the consumption of these sweets.

In their statement, the FDA noted that the risk of contamination from the sweets was "low", adding that those infected with the virus may not have symptoms until 15 to 50 days after exposure. The FDA recommends that anyone who ate sweets purchased after November 14 consult with a healthcare professional.
