Erdogan threats against Kurds will not stop Syria withdrawal, Pompeo says

11 January 2019

Turkey has conducted two successful operations in northern Syria, Operation Euphrates Shield in August 2016 and Operation Olive Branch in January 2018, in which Turkish Army-backed FSA units targeted YPG and Daesh terrorists.

"President Trump has made the decision to bring our troops home from Syria. but this isn't a change of mission".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Egyptian leaders in Cairo Thursday. "And when we partner with enemies, they advance".

As U.S. -backed forces in Syria close in on the final pockets of ISIS fighters near the Iraqi border, militants are trying to flee and planning to slow their opponents by attacking civilians, the YPG said in a statement, Stars and Stripes reported.

Kalin said talks with Bolton focused on how the USA would collect the weapons that were given to Kurdish militias fighting Daesh as well as the future of US bases in Syria. He said he handed over two dossiers to Bolton, one on Turkish help to Kurdish populations in Iraq and Syria, the other on the Kurdish militias' "criminal activities and human rights violations".

What to do with hundreds of foreign so-called Islamic State (IS) fighters captured in Syria has become a critical and growing problem for the Trump administration as it prepares to pull troops out of the country. "We will withdraw our forces, our uniformed forces, from Syria and continue America's crushing campaign", he said.

The Trump administration encountered similar pushback elsewhere on Tuesday, as United States allies pressed their own priorities.

Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East programme at Washington's Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank, said the secretary of state's comments felt "a little bit as if the approach is to "talk loudly and carry a small stick".

That figure is "more than sufficient to bring balance to the market", said Falih, adding that the production cut would trim excess supply from the market.

Safadi also emphasised the position of Jordan and other U.S. allies in the Arab world that a pending American proposal for Israeli-Palestinian peace must recognise Palestinian statehood with East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital.

Trump has not said, however, that he intends to withdraw American forces from Iraq, where 5,200 American troops are stationed. But there are also conflicting estimates on the number of Christians in this area, so troubling questions persist about the consequences of Trump's decision. "Whether or not it withdraws, we will do whatever is necessary against a terrorist organization that threatens our national security". "Everyone is scrambling to reinterpret the president's message".

A spokesman for the secretary said the two men discussed "the US commitment to Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity", as well as the new Iraqi government's "efforts to deliver stability, security and prosperity to all Iraqis".

Trump's national security advisor, John Bolton, then said the pullout would not happen while pockets of Islamic State remain and without a guarantee from Turkey that it won't attack US -backed Kurdish fighters in Syria. "We've beaten them and we've beaten them badly". To prevent an Islamic State resurgence, the U.S. will retain unspecified capabilities on the ground for ongoing operations. National security adviser John Bolton traveled to Israel and Turkey this week and he signaled that the withdrawal may be dragged out.

While there are little doubts that ISIS was largely defeated in both Syria and Iraq, Pompeo's "99%" is probably based on some false data or he just forgot to take a look at some maps which could be easily found online.

Before his arrival in Ankara, Bolton said that no USA troops would leave northern Syria until Turkey agreed to not attack the Syrian Kurds.

Pompeo's visit to Iraq comes less than two weeks after Trump's surprise visit to USA troops at al-Asad Air Base outside of Baghdad which sparked many criticisms inside the country. But this concern has not been made a formal condition of the pullout, according to one person familiar with the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
