Bernie Sanders apologises for campaign sexual harassment

Chuck Todd asked viewers if Senator Bernie Sanders had damaged a possible second presidential campaign over his response to accusations of sexual harassment on his previous 2016 bid.

Kat Brezler, the other co-founder of the People for Bernie Sanders, said in a statement that part of coming together in support of a Sanders 2020 campaign would be to discuss best practices moving forward and to learn from past mistakes on campaigns.

'The allegations that I have heard, that you have heard, speak to unacceptable behavior, that must not be tolerated in any campaign or in any workplace in our country, ' he noted.

Todd then said Sanders had the worst start to 2019, especially compared to Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who has already declared her 2020 presidential campaign. Sanders also said he wasn't aware of a reported $30,000 United States settlement to resolve a discrimination claim against his 2016 campaign.

"Every woman in this country who goes to work today or tomorrow has the right to make sure that she is working in an environment that is free of harassment, which is safe and which is comfortable. I apologize", Sanders tweeted on Thursday.

Robert Becker, the former Iowa state director for Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign, allegedly made several inappropriate comments to a younger, female subordinates before he forcibly kissed her while at a bar with other staffers following the Democratic National Convention, Politico reported earlier Thursday.

The adviser, Robert Becker, has denied any wrongdoing.

More than two dozen former staffers recently sent a letter to Sanders and his aides, seeking a meeting regarding the "sexual violence and harassment on the 2016 campaign" ahead of another bid for the presidency.

Becker traveled to SC - the first-in-the-South primary state - in December for meetings with former Sanders campaign staffers, CNBC previously reported. Was it too white?

Allegations of sexual misconduct and an "untenable and unsafe dynamic that developed during [the Sanders] campaign" have dogged the Vermont senator in recent weeks, according to Politico.

"First things first, we're coming together on January 12 to talk about what worked and what didn't work in 2016 so we can build the strongest campaign for 2020 to support our movement", Brezler said. "That there was a failure pains me very much", Weaver added.

CNN reported on Wednesday that Jeff Weaver, the longtime Sanders confidant and 2016 campaign manager, will not return to the role he held in 2016 should Sanders chose to run again, and Friends of Bernie Sanders confirmed this to VTDigger.
