"Except for that little part where the U.S. Attorney's Office says that you directed and coordinated with Cohen to commit two felonies", Conway wrote in response to Trump.

The documents turned up the heat on Trump by confirming prosecutors' belief of his involvement in a campaign finance violation, while adding to a growing list of contacts between campaign aides and Russians in 2015 and 2016, legal experts said. "Thank you!" he tweeted shortly after the report's release.

Mueller said on Friday that Cohen repeated his false statements about the project in his first meeting with Mueller's office, admitting the truth only in a later meeting in September after he had pleaded guilty to the separate NY charges.

They continued: "The fact that Cohen continued to work on the project and discuss it with [Trump] well into the campaign was material to the ongoing congressional and [special counsel] investigations, particularly because it occurred at a time of sustained efforts by the Russian government to interfere with the USA presidential election".

Around November 2015, some five months after Trump launched his bid for the presidency and well before previously reported contacts, Cohen spoke to a purported "trusted person" in the Russian Federation who offered the campaign "political synergy" and "synergy on a government level".

But also, significantly, the memo documents Cohen's claims that he was operating at the behest of Trump when he paid off two women Trump allegedly had affairs with to keep them from going to the press during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Cohen has pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about negotiations between Trump's business and powerful Russians about a prospective Trump Tower in Moscow, a building that ultimately was never built.

Cohen's crimes "were more serious than his submission allows and were marked by a pattern of deception that permeated his professional life", they said.

NY prosecutors, however, were far harsher in their assessment of Cohen's character, saying he should get only a modest reduction in an expected prison sentence of about five years.

Nitrous oxide is not illegal in Britain but experts say recreational use can be unsafe , especially if combined with alcohol. It is not illegal to possess nitrous oxide but it is illegal to supply it under the 2016 Psychoactive Substances Act.

"Cohen deceived the voting public by hiding alleged facts that he believed would have had a substantial effect on the election", prosecutors said.

Prosecutors urged Pauley to hit Cohen with a $500,000 fine and forfeit his assets in addition to the prison sentence.

"While the office agrees that Cohen should receive credit for his assistance in the [special counsel] investigation, that credit should not approximate the credit a traditional cooperating witness would receive, given, among other reasons, Cohen's affirmative decision not to become one", they wrote.

In August, Cohen pleaded guilty to violating campaign finance law in making the arranged payments.

On Saturday morning, Trump responded to the release of the documents on Twitter (in almost all caps, of course), saying, "AFTER TWO YEARS AND MILLIONS OF PAGES OF DOCUMENTS (and a cost of over $30,000,000), NO COLLUSION!"

Cohen pleaded guilty to financial crimes in a federal court in NY in August and last week pleaded guilty to lying to Congress in a case brought by Mueller.

Cohen, an attorney and businessman, committed four distinct federal crimes over a period of several years.

Castro, a member of the House intelligence committee, which has been investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election, was discussing prosecutors' raft of court filings Friday in the criminal cases against former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. Mueller's memo says Cohen has met with the special counsel's office in seven different sessions to provide valuable information.
