Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa wins Walter Camp, Maxwell awards

07 December 2018

Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa and Oklahoma's Kyler Murray split four college football year-end awards Thursday, setting up a showdown for Saturday night when they contend for the Heisman Trophy.

The last five winners of the Walter Camp have gone on to win the Heisman, but only five Heisman winners have failed to win Associated Press Player of the Year since the award started in 1998. Earlier in the day, Murray was also announced as the AP Player of the Year.

Heisman Trophy candidate Kyler Murray still plans to play Major League Baseball with the Oakland A's next season, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Murray is the fourth OU quarterback to win the Davey O'Brien Award. He is a finalist for the award with Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins and Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

If accurate, those results would mean every unaffiliated absentee voter, as well as some Democrats, went for the Republican. Specifically there are allegations in Bladen County that absentee ballots were illegally stacked in favor of Harris.

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray has put together one of the greatest individual seasons in Sooners football history.

The A's selected Murray with the No. 9 overall pick in the amateur draft last June. Murray, who batted.296 with 10 home runs and 13 doubles in 50 games as the Sooners' center fielder, signed for almost $5 million, with the A's agreeing to let him return to school and play football this season. Mayfield won the award last season. He also added 190 yards and five more touchdowns on the ground, giving him the single-season school record for most combined touchdowns with 42.

As for raw numbers, Murray has thrown for 4,053 yards, 40 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while completing 71 percent of his passes.

"It's been a long journey with a lot of waiting, but I think it's all been worth it", Murray said.
