Betts, Yelich, voted Major League Baseball's MVPs

16 November 2018

Mookie Betts had an unbelievable 2018 season for the Boston Red Sox, and he was recognized for his excellent campaign Thursday when he was named American League MVP.

"I'm thankful it all worked out because being traded, you never know how it's going to be", Yelich said. Trout tied the record of four second-place finishes shared by Stan Musial, Ted Williams and Albert Pujols.

In a year in which he became a world champion and a father, the MVP adds an exclamation point for the dynamic five-tool right fielder and leadoff hitter, who became the first Red Sox to win the award since Dustin Pedroia in 2008.

It's a credit to Betts that he was able to top yet another MVP-worthy performance from the incomparable Mike Trout, whose perennial excellence is not diminished by the fact that a rotating cast of others has occasionally matched or bettered him. Betts can become a free agent after the 2020 season. The Red Sox right fielder was the team's first batting title victor since Bill Mueller in 2003. "Luckily for myself, it all went fantastic". He also had 47 doubles, five triples, 129 runs and 80 RBIs, and his 1.078 OPS was second in Major League Baseball behind only Trout (1.088).

Yelich, who led the Brewers to a National League-leading 96 regular season wins and a return to the NL championship series for the first time since 2011, received 29 of 30 first-place votes to beat out Chicago Cubs second baseman Javier Baez and Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado for the award. Only one first-place vote went to another player, as Mets hurler Jacob deGrom was not-unjustly rewarded for an exceptional season that already netted him a Cy Young Award.

We will give him a guard of honor. "As soon as he comes on tomorrow, I will be giving him that armband back". 'What stood out? Probably being on the pitch with Wayne Rooney .

Yelich almost became the NL's first Triple Crown victor since Joe Medwick in 1937, finishing two homers shy of Arenado and one RBI behind Baez.

Despite being an MVP sleeper for most of the season, Yelich made his case with a stellar second-half performance, including a September surge that helped the Brewers secure their third division title in franchise history.

Yelich gets a $100,000 bonus for winning, and the price of the 2022 team option in his contract increased by $1 million to $16 million. Yelich is from Westlake Village, California, near the site of a recent mass shooting and the Southern California wildfires.

"Almost everyone had to be evacuated, just from the Thousand Oaks, Westlake, Malibu area", he said.
