Ian David Long, 28, is believed to have been the gunman in Wednesday night's shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

As shots were heard at a bar in a suburb of Thousands Oaks, California, a "hero" sheriff's sergeant responded by putting himself in the chaos to try to "save lives" but was shot by the gunman.

A GUNMAN armed with an "Uzi" machine gun and smoke grenades opened fire at a bar in California killing 12 people including a cop and injuring at least ten more today.

Possibly several hundred people were in the Borderline Bar and Grill at an event for college students when the shooting erupted, said Gary Kuredjian of the Ventura County Sheriff's office. Police said Long used a.45-caliber Glock handgun with an illegal, extra-capacity magazine, first shooting a security guard outside the bar. The gun had a special device that permitted it to hold more bullets than usual.

"Obviously he had something going on in his head that caused him to do something like this", he said. "And she looked at me through her tears and she said: 'He would have wanted it that way'".

It also marks the deadliest mass shooting in the country since 17 people were killed earlier this year at a high school in Parkland, Florida.

Students from several nearby universities frequented the popular bar.

Nineteen-year-old Cole Knapp was inside Borderline at the time of the shooting.

Police captain Garo Kuredjian told reporters that cops received a call that shots had been fired at the venue at 11.20pm local time.

The gunfire started during line dancing, witnesses said.

"There were people laying down everywhere", he said.

"They ran out of the back doors, they broke windows, they went through windows". Neighbor Tom Hanson had called the police with concerns about Long's behavior.

Hanson told the Associated Press he had heard shouting and loud noises coming from the Longs' home.

"Only him and I know how I love, how much I miss him", he said. One of the encounters involved a reported disturbance at his home in April that prompted mental health specialists to talk to him.

Long had no criminal record.

He said that there are at least "six victims including one deputy" who are still inside the bar.

It was a scene of horror enacted in many places around the country in recent months, but never before in Thousand Oaks. Thousand Oaks was considered the third-safest city in the USA this year, according to Niche, an online company that provides data on neighborhoods, companies and schools.
