Things had gone pear-shaped plenty of times over the years including in 2016 when the Sheikh remained unfulfilled despite gang-tackling the Melbourne Cup with five runners.
TAB revealed that on Monday morning, a racing fan - seemingly very content with their selection - laid down $50,000 on Cross Counter to win at $10 for a potential payout of $500,000.
The most catastrophic year for the race was 2014, when six-year-old Japanese thoroughbred Admire Rakti collapsed straight after the Melbourne Cup and died in its stall, while Araldo broke his leg on a fence after taking fright and was euthanased.
"It's sinking in now", Appleby said afterwards.
For jockey Kerrin McEvoy, it is his third Melbourne Cup, and he becomes the first jockey to complete the Everest-Cup double.
Bowman, who finished second behind British stayer Cross Counter in the feature race, was initially banned for 41 race meetings but had his suspension reduced to 35 meetings.
The Cliffsofmoher is not the first horse to be put down at the Melbourne Cup.
English trainer Charlie Appleby was full of praise for McEvoy's ride. He (Michael Walker) gave him the most lovely ride.

Georgia's general election is coming up on Tuesday, November 6, and there is national attention on Georgia's choices for governor. After Thursday's dueling outsiders, former president Barack Obama will follow on Friday for Abrams.
The Aidan O'Brien-trained horse suffered a fractured shoulder during Tuesday's race and had to be euthanised, Racing Victoria's executive general manager - integrity services, Jamie Stier, said in a statement.
Before the race, The Cliffsofmoher was "sweating up", which can sometimes be an indication a horse is in distress.
Kerrin McEvoy, who rode the race victor Cross Counter, was fined $3,000 for also exceeding the whip limit, using it nine times before the final 100 metres.
Appleby said the Melbourne Cup had been on his "bucket list for a long time".
The Cup victory notched up 30 Group One wins for Godolphin worldwide in 2018.
"This is all down to Sheikh Mohammad. He's the one that's given us the encouragement to take the chances in what we do", he said.
"We have campaigned over here the last three years now and have been competitive but we have always learnt each trip what horse we felt was going to be needed on the big day".
