Besides PILs in the Supreme Court and Bombay High Court (Nagpur Bench), several wildlife groups and activists had strongly opposed plans to eliminate Avni since it would also mean near-certain death for her two dependent young ones, online petitions and social media campaigns since several months, demonstrations and protests in a bid to save the tigress and her cubs.
For almost three months, 150 ground personnel, elephants and so-called expert trackers and shooters were on a hunt to find Avn as she had killed 13 people over the last two years in the region.
The state forest department had hired an expert hunter and sharpshooter, and mounted an extensive operation involving almost 200 personnel, trap cameras, drones, a pack of trained sniffer dogs and a hang-glider to trace her, broadcaster NDTV reported.
Officials were required to tranquillise and trap the tigress first under a ruling by India's supreme court. The court ruled that it would not interfere if forest rangers were forced to shoot the tiger.

This handout photo released by the Maharashtra Forest Department on November 3, 2018 shows the dead body of the tiger known to hunters as T1 after being shot in the forests of India's Maharashtra state near Yavatmal. "She was killed only after she attacked those trying to tranquilise her", Mungantiwar said. Earlier, Maharashtra forest department had hired private hunter Nawab Shafaat Ali Khan from Hyderabad to help track the elusive man-eating' tigress but failed to capture her. shooter Shafat Ali Khan had also commissioned a powered hang glider and invited his friend Arjuna awardee golfer Jyoti Randhawa with his two dogs to track down the tigress.
Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has termed the killing of an alleged man-eater tigress, Avni, by a sharpshooter in Maharashtra's Yavatmal district on Saturday as a "ghastly murder by a criminal". Asgar Ali's involvement in the hunt for Avni was "patently illegal" Maneka said. "Shafat Ali Khan has killed 3 tigers, at least 10 leopards, a few elephants and 300 wild boar in Chandrapur, Maharashtra". "I've been told that when forest officials were trying to tranquillize her, she lunged at their jeep", said Fadnavis.
PETA India has called for investigation into what it's calling a "wildlife crime".
India is home to the world's largest number of tigers in the wild.
He said a report has been sought by his ministry over the killing of Avni.
