Su-27 fighter jet crashed in Ukraine

17 October 2018

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry confirmed in a statement that an SU-27 fighter jet had crashed Tuesday afternoon "in the area of Ulanov, between the settlements of Berdychiv and Khmilnyk".

It was not immediately clear if the other pilot aboard the Su-27 was killed or injured.

A statement said it "can confirm a US service member was involved in this incident", but stopped short of confirming the American's death.

According to the Ukrainian Military Portal, the accident took place during the multinational military exercise titled "Clear Sky-2018".

A Ukrainian Sukhoi SU-27B went down in the Khmelnytskyi region, killing both the pilot and co-pilot, the Ukrainian military's general staff announced on Tuesday.

California Air National Guard F-15s were deployed to Starokostiantyniv Air Base in Ukraine to train alongside Ukrainian fighters, reported Air Force Times earlier this month.

The aim is "to enhance regional capabilities to secure air sovereignty and promote peace and security through cooperation", a US Air Force statement said as the drills kicked off last week.

The training exercise included US aircraft from the California Air National Guard, including F-15C Eagles and a C-130J Super Hercules, in addition to an F-15D from the 48th Fighter Wing, KC-135s from the Illinois Air National Guard and the 100th Air Refueling Wing.
