Officials warn residents to keep an eye on Tropical Storm Michael

10 October 2018

Michael is forecasted to become a major hurricane by Tuesday or Tuesday night.

Tropical storm Michael formed in the Caribbean yesterday and nearly immediately meteorologists were warning of a hurricane Michael landfall in the Florida Panhandle area of the Gulf Coast around the middle of this week.

In the Washington DC region we are expecting a plume of deep tropical moisture associated with Michael to enhance our threat of rain, showers & t-storms Thursday ahead of a cold front.

Michael was about 485 miles south of Panama City, Fla. and 450 miles south of Apalachicola, Fla., the NHC said in a 10 p.m. advisory Monday. The storm more than likely will become a Hurricane before it makes landfall along the coastal panhandle of Florida.

The depression was moving north at 3 miles per hour. The storm will accelerate and strengthen to category two or three hurricane status through Tuesday night, followed by a northeastward motion on Wednesday and Thursday.

"Heavy rainfall, wind and storm surge impacts will be possible across portions of the northern Gulf Coast by midweek", according to the hurricane center.

The only other storm now in the Atlantic Ocean is Tropical Storm Leslie, which has zig-zagged in intensity.

Asked to clarify what he meant, he replied: "In the decisions, in the randomness, in the pure consistency". Stroll was handed two points on his superlicence, taking his tally for the rolling 12 month period to six.

Tropical storm force winds are possible as early as Wednesday.

UPDATE (11:00 A.M.) - Hurricane Michael is still a Category 2 storm, though now maximum sustained winds are measured at 110 miles per hour. Stronger SW swell moves in later Tuesday and especially Wednesday.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, who is also the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in the November 6 election, said on Sunday he was cancelling his campaign events and returning to Tallahassee, the state capital, to focus on storm preparations. "Areas hit hard by Florence may face disruptions to ongoing cleanup efforts or renewed flooding depending on the track of the storm", AccuWeather senior meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said. The storm was moving north at 12 miles per hour and strengthening with maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour. Winds overall look decent/light since Texas will be in a weak pressure pattern west of Michael. "We're going to get storm surge, we have wind, we have a chance of flooding, we have a significant chance of tornadoes".

Florida Panhandle: SE windswell builds today, especially western beaches.

Now is the time to prepare in the case of heavy rain and severe storms.

A hurricane watch is in effect along the Alabama-Florida border down to the Suwanee River.
