Chicago Cubs star Addison Russell was placed on administrative leave Friday after the re-emergence of domestic violence allegations by his ex-wife in a blog posting. In a powerful, personal 2,800-word essay, Melisa Reidy-Russell had described her former husband as an emotionally and physically abusive partner.
The couple split up in June 2017 after Melisa posted a now-deleted Instagram photo alleging infidelity.
Major League Baseball has been investigating allegations of abuse by Russell since June.
Late Thursday, a blog post attributed to Reidy contained more detailed allegations, including years of physical and emotional abuse. The league did not make this same decision a year ago when allegations first surfaced because they were based on a third party's comment on Instagram, whereas now there is a direct allegation from a victim. The league said Reidy had declined to cooperate with investigators past year, but new efforts would be made.
"Obviously, we take it very, very seriously", added Cubs owner Tom Ricketts.
José Mourinho: Manchester United’s improved defence not just due to defenders
Have United turned the corner? Manchester United are just one point ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League table. We're back at home after three away wins, and I think the atmosphere will be very positive for us.
This follows the earlier report that Russell will not be with the Cubs as they travel across town to face the White Sox this afternoon.
"The first time I was physically mistreated by my spouse, I was in shock", she wrote. I couldn't wrap my head around what just happened ... Reidy declined to participate in the investigation at the time, and Russell was never punished by the league. Why did he get so angry? The league-imposed administrative leave, an intermediate step, can last up to seven days, after which MLB can request an extension for another seven days.
Russell denied those allegations at the time, saying in a statement, "Any allegation I have abused my wife is false and hurtful".
"I would say I know him in a baseball context", Epstein said.
"Of course I forgave him & assumed it would never happen again". "After he would calm down from his angry spells, I'd always get the most honest apologies, making me believe how sorry he was & he's working on bettering himself".
The 24-year-old Russell is hitting.250 with five homers and 38 RBIs in 130 games this season.
