Mayland football coach DJ Durkin placed on leave

In the weeks following University of Maryland football player Jordan McNair's death from heatstroke, UMD has placed members of their athletic staff on administrative leave.

As of now, offensive coordinator Matt Canada, who was hired by Maryland in January, will be the interim head coach.

The report comes a few months after offensive lineman Jordan McNair died following a workout.

"At this time, the best decision for our football program is to place".

June 21, 2018: ESPN.com confirms the McNair family retained the law firm of Murphy, Falcon & Murphy to represent the family. "This is effective immediately", athletic director Damon Evans said in a statement.

The report said McNair had "showed signs of extreme exhaustion" before he died of heatstroke suffered during the May workout. Durkin in light of an ESPN report published Friday night.

ESPN reported allegations of a "toxic culture" in Maryland's football program that included excessive verbal abuse, a coach purposely throwing small weights in the direction of players and the "punitive" use of food for players who were overweight or underweight.

Muschamp also addressed allegations from anonymous players, questioning their veracity and the players' motives.

Durkin wrote in a letter to the Baltimore Sun that the program was "cooperating fully" with investigators.

After the Maryland athletic department placed Durkin on leave Saturday afternoon, Gov. Larry Hogan released a statement in support of the decision.

Earlier Saturday, a person who had been briefed on the situation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity that Court had been placed on leave by the school.
