She settled in NY in 1996, met the future president two years later and became his third wife in 2005.

The Knavs' immigration attorney accompanied the couple to the ceremony.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, the parents of first lady Melania Trump, were granted citizenship Thursday, their immigration attorney, Michael Wildes, announced.

The Knavs were sworn in as USA citizens on Thursday in Lower Manhattan, The New York Times reported. He confirmed that the first lady sponsored their green cards. First lady Melania Trump's parents have been sworn in as US citizens.

Trump's plan, which Congress has resisted, would limit immigrants like his wife to sponsoring only their spouses and underage children to join them in the US, not their parents, adult children or siblings.

Melania Trump's parents have been sworn in as United States citizens.

Their son-in-law has frequently attacked U.S. immigration laws, calling them the "dumbest laws on immigration in the world".

Viktor and Amalija Knavs are retired, and they maintain regular contact with the Trump family, often traveling with the first family on trips to Mar-a-Lago and Bedminster, New Jersey. They would appreciate their privacy and we just thank everybody for their attention to this very important dialogue that we are having on immigration. "This is an example of it going right". A smaller number go to immigrants based on their employment, and other categories include refugees and other special cases.

There has been speculation that the President Donald Trump's in-laws may have benefited from the "chain migration" process that he has claimed endangers Americans and vowed to restrict.

It's unclear whether Mr and Mrs Knavs had their green cards granted by a process the President Trump has sought to end.
