Rooney: Everton "made it clear" I had to leave

15 July 2018

Rooney made his Major League Soccer debut Saturday as a second-half substitute and assisted on the third goal in D.C. United's 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in the first game played at Audi Field.

The former Everton man recently left Goodison Park for MLS side DC United, and has weighed in with his opinion of England's World Cup heroics.

He continued saying that he still had two years left on his contract at Old Trafford and he could have very easily stayed there and collected his wages till his contract had expired but he chose otherwise.

Rooney, who led Everton with 11 goals in all competitions last season, also said the Premier League club did not give him a reason that he wasn't in the plans for next season.

On this point, Rooney said: "For whatever reason, I still don't know".

I felt I had done okay, was top goalscorer, played most of the season from midfield, but that's football.

"Jordan Henderson has excelled as Liverpool captain, helping them to the Champions League final", Rooney said, as quoted on ESPN's official YouTube channel (12:45 to 12:55).

This late in his career, Pacquiao still has an opportunity to preserve his legacy with a win over a younger fighter for a title.

Rooney made it clear he won't be shy about speaking his mind. I said to Everton, "I'm not a kid. If you want me to stay, tell me" and we talked about it. As an 18, 20 or 21 year old, I wouldn't have been able to handle it as well as I have.

"Another tough week of training now and hopefully I can get a bit more game time next week", Rooney said.

A host of famous players have played in MLS in recent years, including the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, with the latter now playing for LA Galaxy alongside Rooney's former team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But Rooney is the same age as David Beckham was when he debuted with the LA Galaxy in 2007.

"I think only because of performances - for Manchester United, Jesse Lingard got the opportunity to go and play in every game at the World Cup for England. I'm open to ideas he thinks can benefit the club".
