Ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif gestures as he boards a Lahore-bound flight due for departure, at Abu Dhabi International Airport, UAE July 13, 2018. A special plane later carried Sharif and Maryam to Islamabad.

The Sharifs arrived in Pakistan's second city from the United Kingdom on Friday evening, submitting themselves for arrest after they were convicted by an anti-corruption court last week, Geo TV and Dawn newspaper reported. The judge accepted the argument and deputed a local magistrate to visit the convicts to record their arrest and allow NAB to hand them over to the jail authorities.

The duo, who are convicted in Avenfield reference case, will stay at the Abu Dhabi airport for seven hours and will reach Lahore at 6.15pm (2.15 United Kingdom time), sources said. The Sharifs were in London to look after ailing Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, when they were awarded imprisonment in the corruption case.

Sharif reportedly refused to sit in the vehicle of the Rangers to get to the airport terminal. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officials took their passports into possession.

According to a DC report, the duo may be held mid-air.

Sources said Nawaz Sharif and Maryam are fully cooperated with the 16-member NAB team.

Sharif was ordered jailed after failing to explain how the family acquired the London flats in a case stemming from 2016 Panama Papers revelations that showed they owned the apartments through off-shore companies.

They also used this time to send messages to their supporters, urging them to stand with ex-PM Sharif and "change the fate of the country".

"The country is at a critical juncture right now".
