First Human Case of West Nile Virus Reported for 2018

14 July 2018

That's the message from Alberta Health Services as the warm weather brings out more mosquitoes. Mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with repellent containing permethrin or another EPA-registered repellent will give extra protection.

There were an additional 409 cases of West Nile-positive mosquito pools. In the other 24 states, the virus has only been found in mosquitos, birds or other animals.

This is the first positive indicator of West Nile Virus in the county for 2018.

The reported case is in Hinds County. This is also called West Nile encephalitis or meningitis.

'A great meeting': Trump wants North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies to double defence spending
To Trump, and not only to him, we are being used, gouged, by rich nations we defend, while they skimp on their own defense. He said the allies had confirmed their intention to meet the goal of 2 per cent by 2024 and no more .

Between 2003 and last year, Alberta recorded 514 cases of West Nile - although there's been only a handful over the past couple years. West Nile Virus is active throughout the State of California. The 2018 larviciding program will continue throughout the summer season, along with the investigation of standing water complaints and the distribution of educational materials. It's been reported in other countries for more than 50 years.

Take extra care during peak mosquito biting hours. The incubation period for the virus is anywhere from three days to two weeks. Symptoms of West Nile Virus include fever, rash, headache and joint pain.

"Fortunately, most people infected with WNV do not have symptoms".
