Trade and tea with queen for Trump in a Britain in 'turmoil'

12 July 2018

US President Donald Trump gives a thumbs up while he and Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May take part in a family photo at the start of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels.

It is the USA president's first visit to the United Kingdom since he won the election and he will meet with both Theresa May at Chequers and the Queen in Windsor.

Mr Trump's planned visit has been met with plenty of anger, with 50,000 protesters expected to take to the streets of central London on Friday.

"From the public, the welcome will be far from warm", he told lawmakers on Wednesday, noting there would be protests across the country against Trump's "abysmal record on human rights, his repugnant attitude towards women and his disgusting treatment of minorities". That prompted almost half a million people to sign a petition calling for Trump to be banned from the UK. The proposal was debated in parliament where Trump was heavily criticized.

Mr Trump's son Eric has arrived in Scotland for a golfing visit to Trump International Golf Links at Menie, Aberdeenshire, and Trump Turnberry, near Girvan, South Ayrshire.

He again postponed his visit in January this year after remarking that the relocation of the United States embassy in London was a "bad deal" made by President Obama, and that he was not interested in cutting the ribbon at the opening.

The two leaders will hold talks the following day at Chequers, the 16th-century manor house which is the prime minister's official country residence which will focus on Russian Federation, trade, Brexit and Middle East.

It explains that "numerous demonstrations" have been planned for President Trump's visit between July 12 and 14, with most of those in central London, and large crowds expected.

The deaths of her father in 2016 and her mother in February previous year added to the mountain of grief Liu Xia was carrying. The first, Carl von Ossietzky, died of tuberculosis in Germany in 1938 while jailed for opposing Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime.

The US Embassy in London has issued a warning to Americans in Britain to keep a "low profile" during Donald Trump's visit.

They will then spend the night at the American ambassador's residence in Regent's Park, Winfield House.

Opposition MPS, backed by an online petition signed by almost 1.9 million people, called on May to cancel the state visit offered when she met Trump in Washington after his inauguration in January a year ago.

The state visit has never actually materialized, partly due to fierce opposition to it in many quarters of Britain.

Later, Trump will go to Windsor Castle for tea with 92-year-old Queen Elizabeth. It was during that trip to Washington that she invited him to the UK.

"When we leave the European Union we will begin to chart a new course for Britain in the world and our global alliances will be stronger than ever", May said ahead of Trump's visit.

The two leaders are also expected to discuss Russia, Brexit and Middle East.
