The family was returning from a trip to Ocean City, Maryland Friday afternoon when a pickup truck crossed the median for unknown reasons, struck a vehicle and skidded into the path of their minivan.

Northbound lanes remained closed into the evening as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared, with traffic diverted onto USA 13.

The operator of the Sable, a 24-year-old male from Bethlehem PA, was transported to a local area hospital where he was treated and released with non-life threatening injuries. He suffered only minor injuries.

It's still not clear why the Ford truck swerved across the median in Townsend, Delaware.

Officials in DE have identified the driver of the truck as a Maryland resident, but no charges have been filed.

The minivan, which is indiscernible, was carrying a family of six from New Jersey. Police said the father and the girls were pronounced dead at the scene; the daughters were not wearing seatbelts.

Matriarch of the family, Mary Rose Ballocanag, 53, is now hospitalized with serious injuries, however, she is expected to survive. "That's it. In one big sweep", said Audie's brother Danny Trinidad. "So far, we're holding up, you know, we're holding up as best as we can".

Delaware State Police on Saturday did not release the names of those killed, but they did say the New Jersey family was from the town of Teaneck. "They were good kids with great parents and it is frightful that it had to happen to them".
