Microsoft entry-level Surface Go launched to take on iPad, Chromebooks

10 July 2018

Watch out, Apple - Microsoft has just announced its cheapest and most affordable Surface product to date, the Surface Go.

The Surface Go has a 10-inch screen, about the same size as the entry-level iPad.

Ports? Yup: there's USB-C for power and video, a headphone jack, and a MicroSD card to get you beyond the 64GB, 128GB or 256GB installed at the factory.

Available in 4GB RAM / 64GB storage, 8/128, 8/128 LTE and 8/256 LTE SKUs, but I don't think all of them will come out in one go.

Finally, we should note that the Surface Go is not now offered with 4G LTE support and you can only get a Wi-Fi one, while iPads are offered in both styles.

One notable aspect that differentiates this Surface tablet compared to previous models is the presence of USB-C. Pre-orders have opened, but actual shipping starts in August. This is in addition to the Surface Connector which can also be used for charging purposes and connecting the Surface desktop dock.

There's also a new Surface Mobile Mouse for $34.99 (around £30, AU$45), which will be available in the same red, blue, or silver color options as the Signature Type Covers and the existing Surface Pen.

An official document leaked by a Reddit user indicates that the device might possibly be launched this week, along with a new Type Cover.

The price for the actual Surface Go starts from $399 for the 4/64 GB version and goes to $549 for the 8/128 GB variant.

The tablet runs on Windows 10 Home (S) which means it is only capable of installing and running apps from the Windows store.

As you may recall, Bloomberg broke the news about a coming $400 Surface tablet in May. Steve Troughton-Smith tweeted a couple of weeks ago that the device will be called Surface Go, so that line could very well be another hint. At just 1.15 pounds and 8.3 mm thin, Surface Go is the company's smallest and lightest computer yet.

The new lightweight Surface Go - about twice as big as many smartphones - is created to be portable.

The Surface Go's keyboard seen in the photos will be sold separately for $99 or $129 for the Signature Type Cover, which uses a scissor key mechanism and has 1mm of key travel.

You can preorder Surface Go today in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Taiwan, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Malaysia, and Thailand.
