While precise details of Liu's flight out of China are unknown, the only Finnair flight that left Beijing Capital International Airport bound for Berlin on Tuesday morning was Flight AY86, which took off at 10.55am, according to the airport's website. Her brother, Liu Hui, was not on the plane, they said.
"Liu Xia has been kept isolated for so many years", said Wu by phone from the southern city of Guangzhou. Poon, citing an unnamed source, said Liu had been allowed to leave but her brother, Liu Hui has to remain in Beijing.
Liu Xia, the widow of late Chinese political dissident and Nobel Peace Prize victor Liu Xiaobo, has left Beijing on a flight to Berlin, according to news reports. On the same visit, at a joint press conference with Merkel, Chinese premier Li Keqiang said China was prepared to discuss "relevant individual cases" with Germany.
The United Nations, United States, European Union and other foreign governments and groups have urged China to lift restrictions on Liu Xia's movements.
In a July 2017 photo released by the Shenyang Municipal Information Office, Liu Xia, wife of jailed Nobel Peace Prize victor and Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, holds a portrait of him during his funeral at a funeral parlor in Shenyang in northeastern China's Liaoning Province.
The post was verified by two of Liu Xia's close friends.
She has been under de-facto house arrest since 2010 after her husband, Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel peace prize in absentia for his activism in China.
In May, Western diplomats tried to visit her in her home, but were turned away by security personnel, an official of one of the embassies involved told Reuters at the time.
"Sister has already left Beijing for Europe at noon to start her new life".

Liu's friends in recent months have said her mental condition has steadily deteriorated, particularly since the death of her husband. He was later released but remained closely monitored, according to friends of the family, and is still in China.
He had been sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges of inciting subversion of state power.
