Meanwhile, activists argued Mr Pruitt's policies of moving to boost fossil fuel production and rollback regulations opposed by corporate interests had endangered the environment. Wheeler spent 14 years working for Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe, the most ardent climate science denier; he's also worked as a lobbyist for the coal industry, reports Mother Jones. The good news that Andrew Wheeler, a former coal industry lobbyist and the EPA's deputy director, would be taking over as acting administrator.
A former Oklahoma attorney general close to the oil and gas industry, Pruitt had filed more than a dozen lawsuits against the agency he was picked to lead.
He was also instrumental previous year in lobbying Trump to withdraw the United States from the global 2015 Paris climate accord to combat global warming.
He says the Trump administration "can be assured that same energy and passion that helped boot Scott Pruitt will be focused on ensuring the next EPA administrator works for the public, not corporate polluters".
The embattled head of the US Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt, has quit his post. The recommendations include a 50 percent cut to the EPA staff, and USA withdrawal from the Paris climate change agreement-which Trump already initiated.
Despite the laundry list of ethics complaints putting him on thin ice, Pruitt was invited to and appeared at the White House Wednesday for Trump's Independence Day celebration, where he and other cabinet members received a shout-out from the president. Somebody who believes in climate change and takes it seriously, for the benefit of all of us, including our children.
At the EPA, staffers expect Wheeler to stick to the agenda set by Pruitt and Trump: Cutting environmental regulations that the Trump administration and industries see as unnecessarily burdensome to business, Southerland, the former water official, said. Trump nominated Wheeler for EPA's number two job on October 5, 2017.
UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson Resigns
Before Johnson quit, May's official spokesman, James Slack, said Britain wanted to "move forward at pace" in the negotiations. But leading pro-Brexit legislator Jacob Rees-Mogg said "I don't think a no-confidence vote is immediately in the offing".
Senator Kamala Harris, Democrat from California:"Just because Scott Pruitt resigned doesn't mean we've forgotten about the taxpayer funds he's misused or the damage he's done to our environment". "Except when you're dealing with Trump, you're dealing with many issues of enormous consequences". There are more than 500 abandoned mines, some of which are already part of the EPA's Superfund program.
Scott Dworkin, co-founder of the Democratic Coalition: "Someone needs to make sure Scott Pruitt doesn't smuggle his $43,000 soundproof phone booth out of the EPA offices". Pruitt said his staff never told him the cost.
In one of the more high-profile accusations, Pruitt reportedly tried to use his political influence to smooth the way for his wife, Marlyn.
Pruitt enlisted EPA staff to find his wife a job paying upwards of $200,000 a year.
Some of the tasks were outright freaky, including a reported order to find and obtain a used Trump-brand mattress from a Trump hotel.
During congressional testimony in April, Pruitt was unapologetic for the controversies, often blaming his staff for any agency missteps.
