The boys were transferred by helicopter and ambulance to a hospital where they are being treated, but officials did not disclose details of their condition. CNN's Jonathan Miller reported that the eight boys and coach who remain stranded in the cave would likely have to stay put for a couple of days due to issues restocking oxygen supplies. "The operation went much better than expected, " said Chiang Rai acting Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn, who is overseeing the mission.

The rescue mission began on Sunday morning, almost a week since the 12 boys, aged 11-16, and their coach had been discovered on an embankment 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) inside the winding tunnels. There are reports the divers re-entered the cave around 1pm local time Monday.

At 10 a.m. local time, 10 divers headed to chamber 9 where the boys are located and the others will remain along the route to assist.

Two divers were assigned to each child to help them navigate the risky, narrow passageways.

After a short deluge of rain on Saturday night and with more bad weather forecast, Narongsak said on Sunday morning authorities had to act immediately.

Previously, the entire round trip through the cave network was thought to take roughly 11 hours to complete, but efforts to drain the tunnels of flood water appear to have shortened the journey time by at least three and a half hours.

Mr Musk said the device is on its way to Thailand and will "hopefully" be useful. Officials went on to say the next cave rescue attempt will take place in 10-20 hours. "The boys are ready to face any challenges", rescue chief Narongsak Osottanakorn told reporters near the cave site. Spare air canisters had also been placed along the route.

Thirteen foreign divers and five members of Thailand's elite navy seal unit are trying to bring the rest of the boys - some as young as 11 and weak swimmers - through narrow, submerged passageways that claimed the life of a former Thai navy diver on Friday.

Now, while no further rescue efforts can be carried out on Sunday, there has been a breakthrough as the boys were retrieved.

Teams have used high-powered pumps to empty more than 100 million of gallons of water out of the cave. He said it could take several days for doctors to replenish the nutrients the boys lost during their cave ordeal.

Efforts underway to extract the boys have involved a swelling team of thousands of divers, engineers, military personnel and volunteers from all over the world - including Elon Musk's SpaceX.
