Ant-Man and the Wasp Gets Really Big Opening Weekend

09 July 2018

Not only did Ant-Man And The Wasp debut this weekend with an impressive $76 million, but Incredibles 2 retained its number two spot at the box office, causing Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom to slip to number three after being at the number one spot for the last two weeks.

The just-released sequel is pacing 45% ahead of its 2015 predecessor internationally after its $76 million stateside bow topped the $57.2 million domestic opening weekend of the first. Sequels everywhere! And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how you get ants. All 20 films have opened No. 1 at the box office.

This now marks the last in the triumvirate of films that Marvel had slated for 2018, capping off what's been the biggest year for the studio to date.

Befitting the summer season, the weekend's top five films were all sequels. This is the fourth film in the Purge franchise, all of which have delivered strong domestic performances on very low budgets with 2016's The Purge: Election Year serving as the highest grossing of the lot, delivering just shy of $80 million.

Universal and Blumhouse's The First Purge debuted early on the 4th of July, getting a head start on the weekend, earning over $ 17 million with a grand total of $31 million, coming in 4th place.

New offering "The First Purge" launched overseas with $10.9 million in 26 markets, including $2.2 million in the United Kingdom and Ireland, $2.1 million in France, $1.5 million in Germany, and $1.1 million in Spain. "First Purge", a Staten Island-set prequel, focuses on the ritual's origins as a method of culling minorities. "The diversity in their filmmaking resonates with audiences", said Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff. "The Purge franchise continually comments on issues that are current in society, obviously through a kind of dark and distorted lens". Internationally, the film has made $5.7 million, and opens in North America on July 13. But whether due to travel- or weather-related reasons, nationwide ticket sales were unexpectedly soft on Saturday. The 2018 box office as a whole, which just hit $6.5 billion, is up 9 percent from a year ago, according to ComScore.

Various chlorinated organic chemicals were found in samples from Locations 2 and 4, along with residues of explosive. The United States, Britain and France blamed Syrian government forces and launched punitive airstrikes.

Superheroes continue to dominate the summer box office.

The films that trailed "Ant-Man" hit their own milestones. So far, Incredibles 2 has made $773 million at the worldwide box office.

With $28.6 million in its third weekend, Universal's "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" crossed $1 billion worldwide.

As a clear alternative to the multiplex offerings, the "Mister Rogers" documentary "Won't You Be My Neighbor" continued to perform as an art-house sensation.

"The First Purge" took fourth place at the box office this weekend, picking up $17.1 million. Sorry to Bother You also opened this weekend and earned over $717 thousand, giving it the 16th spot.

Movie theaters in China were packed by a based-on-a-true-story black comedy about a man who becomes a savior to leukemia patients by smuggling cheaper generic drugs from India. As per last weekend, the global estimates are not available at this time. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
