Melania Trump wears ‘I really don't care' jacket before visiting migrant children

24 June 2018

The green hooded spring military jacket has the words written graffiti-style on the back.

"I'm here to learn about your facility", the first lady said as she met with staff and federal health and border patrol officials.

Here is the problem: The role of the first family is TO care - about the country and the world - including about immigrants who come to America for opportunity, just like Melania Trump did. "After today's important visit to Texas, I hope this isn't what the media is going to choose to focus on", Grisham said.

We can puzzle and argue over her reasoning in wearing, in this context, such a callous message on her back as she left to visit children detained miles from home and family, but there is no way to get around the optics here.

In an email to USA TODAY, her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, dismissed the idea there was anything wrong with the jacket, which Trump was wearing again when she returned to Washington Thursday evening.

She ignored question from reporters as she entered the presidential motorcade. The facility opened in 2014 and now houses 55 children.

She is calling on Congress to pass immigration legislation that secures the borders and keeps families together.

A loss to the Scandinavians would send the World Cup champions out at the group stage for the first time since France in 2002. Germany coach Joachim Loew said he was not aware of any taunting. " Mats Hummels will probably not be able to play".

Grisham said any questions about her choice of jacket (it was raining heavily in McAllen when she arrived) are as inconsequential as the criticism on social media previous year about the towering heels Trump wore to get on Air Force One when she traveled to Texas to see recovery efforts after Hurricane Harvey. She was on a surprise trip to the U.S. border with Mexico to learn about the plight of migrant children held in a shelter there. She had changed into white sneakers by the time she and the president landed. Staff said the children, who are mostly from Guatemala, typically spend between 42 and 45 days at the facility, which is operated by a Lutheran social services organization contracted by the government. Grisham sent out a tweet saying the first lady's visit with children in Texas impacted the first lady "greatly".

On Thursday, Melania Trump faced criticism over her choice of outerwear after making an unannounced visit to the Texas border near Mexico.

Given the maelstrom of horror over the child separation policy (and massively bad press for the President) that preceded Melania Trump's trip, it strains the imagination to believe Grisham's story that this was all a big misunderstanding.

The Department of Health and Human Services has yet to release any details on how they will reunite the 2,300 children separated from their families. Fashion speaks - and Mrs. Trump, a former fashion model, is known to carefully select her outfits before public appearances, paying careful attention to the designer and tone of her sartorial selection.

Grisham also said she hoped the media would want to report on today's trip, which the first lady asked her staff to plan on Tuesday-two days after Grisham issued the following statement on her behalf about the border issue: "Mrs. Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform".

"She told her staff she wanted to go and we made that happen", Grisham said.
