U.S., Mexico, & Canada to Host 2026 World Cup

14 June 2018

The United States will be joined by Canada and Mexico in hosting the 2026 World Cup, FIFA has announced.

Morocco on Wednesday lost out to a joint bid fronted by the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico who will now host the global sporting showpiece in eight years' time. The 2026 tournament will be the first hosted by multiple countries since the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

Currently, Gillette (by extension of Boston) is on the list of 23 candidate host cities.

And in 2003, the stadium hosted three Women's World Cup games, including a 1-0 US quarterfinal win over Norway.

"FIFA could not provide a basic level of certainty on some major unknowns that put our city and taxpayers at risk".

USA, Canada and Mexico had been considered favourites throughout the bidding process, despite some suggesting the controversial politics of American president Donald Trump could help Morocco.

Federation Internationale de Football Association insists that contracts with host cities contain a provision they be governed under Swiss law and give Federation Internationale de Football Association the ability to modify agreements at any time.

"I have also watched a number of friendly games of the big teams and favourites, and I have not seen anything to suggest African teams will be found wanting at the World Cup".

'Don't expect too much': Rodman plays down Kim Trump breakthrough
In extraordinary scenes, Kim smiled as he walked and waved towards the crowd of tourists, families and media as a "woo" went up. In 2014, Trump tweeted dismissively about the possibility that he and Rodman would someday travel to North Korea together.

Bid leader Cordeiro said his team was "humbled" by the result and predicted the tournament would put football "on a new and sustainable path for generations to come".

The FIFA World Cup of soccer is coming to Montreal in 2026 and Olympic Stadium is going to finally get the retractable roof it didn't have for the 1976 Olympics.

Fifa's president, Gianni Infantino, looked opportunistically quick to immediately put himself forward for re-election next year, and he was followed by United States president Donald Trump with a self-congratulatory tweet.

Edmonton proved its hosting abilities during the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, he said. "So we're speaking to all of them".

But which cities and stadiums will host games at the tournament is still being determined.

The Slovenian has already publicly encouraged England to bid for the tournament either alone or as part of a joint British bid, and he repeated that message here.

Morocco plans to use 14 stadiums, nine of which have yet to be built with the other five due for renovation. None of the US, Canada or Mexico work all that often with their AFC counterparts, but the United Bid team sensed an opportunity in the region. That was the only World Cup that Canada's men's team has ever qualified for. The two highest-ranked teams according to FIFA's rankings will receive byes, while the other four will play knockout games.
