What Happened: The United States sanctioned five Russian entities and three individuals in retaliation for cyberattacks, including the NotPetya and cyber intrusions against the U.S. energy grid, the U.S. Treasury Department announced June 11 on its website.
Examples of Russia's malign and destabilizing cyber activities include the destructive NotPetya cyber-attack; cyber intrusions against the USA energy grid to potentially enable future offensive operations; and global compromises of network infrastructure devices, including routers and switches, also to potentially enable disruptive cyber-attacks. "As of 2015, Digital Security worked on a project that would increase Russia's offensive cyber capabilities for the Russian Intelligence Services", including the FSB, according to the US government.
This story is breaking and will be updated.
In particular, Aleksandr Tribun, Oleg Chirikov and Vladimir Kaganskiy along with Russian companies Erpscan, which offices are located in Amsterdam, Prague and Tel-Aviv, were included to the sanctions list.
The sanctions are also in response to Russia's tracking and potential targeting of undersea communication cables, which carry the bulk of the world's telecommunications data, officials said. The U.S. agency did provide details of what the companies did to bolster the FSB's offensive cyber capabilities, but identified them as a threat to U.S. security nonetheless.
Today Only: Free tacos at Taco Bell
Maybe a taco will cheer up the sad Cavs fans. "We know one thing is for certain, everyone will be rooting for tacos". Are there any two words better than "free taco"? It's not called "Steal a game, steal a bunch of tacos".
According to a Treasury Department announcement, one of the entities is a company controlled by Russia's Federal Security Service, or FSB.
As previously reported "FACTS", the US Treasury made a decision to impose sanctions against three Russian citizens and five companies of the country.
Embedi has found a lot of vulnerabilities in products from Microsoft, Intel and Cisco among others - but has disclosed them in the same way any other security research company does. Digital Security has some major clients, including Yandex, QIWI, Mail.ru Group, Tele2, and SAP. "ERPScan is a private company registered in 2014 in the Netherlands and are not a subsidiary of any company listed in this document". Russian Sen. Konstantin Kosachev said Washington is revealing that its mechanism for punishing Russia is "out of the control of common sense" and looks "more and more unconvincing and ever more pitiful".
"From my opinion it's the only one connection we have with Digital Security".
According to the Treasury Department, the sanctioned firms and individuals are involved in supporting and bolstering the Russian government's offensive hacking activities against the United States and other countries. "We are a software company focused on helping to protect ERP systems".
