North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un during the U.S.
After almost five hours of unprecedented talks between Trump and Kim on Tuesday, the two leaders signed a document in which Kim "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" and the United States agreed to "provide security guarantees".
"Under the circumstances that we're negotiating a very comprehensive complete deal I think it's inappropriate to have war games", Trump said during a press conference in Singapore earlier this week. Already, North Korea has criticized the United States and South Korea's military drills, saying they're not helpful for peace talks.
Everyone had been wondering how much of his nuclear programme he'd be willing to put on the table to get that.
In the joint statement, North Korea only agreed to "work toward" denuclearization.
But the new epoch envisioned here by Trump and Kim may be one in which the United States loses its grip on Asia, and then the world, and the new future will likely be ruled from Beijing, not Washington. Meeting with Kim Jong Un was an interesting and very positive experience.
Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program will come to an end, he asserted, claiming that Kim had already left Singapore and was "on his way back" to North Korea to begin implementing their joint vows.
Pompeo's comments came after North Korean state media reported on Wednesday that Trump had agreed to a "step-by-step" process, suggesting that North Korea would gain concessions from the USA at the same time.
Starting with Kim Il-sung, North Korean leaders have passed down their rule to their heirs.
U.S., Mexico, & Canada to Host 2026 World Cup
The two highest-ranked teams according to FIFA's rankings will receive byes, while the other four will play knockout games. Edmonton proved its hosting abilities during the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, he said. "So we're speaking to all of them".
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that he expects North Korea to take steps toward major nuclear disarmament within the next two-and-a-half years. "And, I'll be honest, we are being taken advantage of by virtually very one of those countries".
North Korea could begin giving up its weapons today if it wanted to, but it instead has insisted on staging performances of denuclearization rather than on inviting worldwide inspectors to verify its progress. The talks followed on from an inter-Korean summit in April at which Moon and Kim agreed to defuse tension and cease "hostile acts".
The statement made no mention of verification, despite Trump's longstanding insistence on "complete, verifiable and irreversible" denuclearization.
While Trump was facing questions at home and among allies about whether he gave away too much in return for too little, North Korean state media heralded claims of a victorious meeting with the USA president.
Trump had also wanted a commitment to ending the Korean War, which was stopped by an armistice, not a peace treaty, leaving the Korean Peninsula still technically in a state of war.
He is known to have stopped over at airbases in Guam and Hawaii to encourage USA forces and is expected to arrive at the White House sometime Wednesday morning.
On Wednesday, Japan's Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera pointedly said the drills played a "vital role in East Asia's security".
Even while buckling under the USA administration's "maximum pressure" policy of energetic sanctions expansion and implementation - a policy that is now dead in the water after the summit - Kim was able to complete a sufficiently credible nuclear deterrent to force the United States to the negotiating table.
Ri's image has often appeared on South Korean coverage of major events in North Korea, meaning some South Koreans, associating her with ominous developments, dread her appearance.
