SC woman who stole baby in FL sentenced

11 June 2018

The Florida woman who pleaded guilty to kidnapping a newborn and raising the child as her own has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

The sheriff's office said that tips to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children led them to Gloria Williams, age 51, who is the woman suspected of kidnapping Mobley from her hospital room at University Medical Center, which is now UF Health-Jacksonville.

After receiving tips that Kamiyah was alive and living in SC, detectives with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office traveled to SC and with police there, arrested Gloria Williams at her home in Walterboro, where she lived with her children.

July 10, 1998, Williams posed as a hospital nurse and kidnapped the newborn out of a Florida hospital.

On the day of Kamiyah's birth, Williams told teen mother Shanara Mobley she was the nurse assigned to her that day.

Williams raised Mobley - who grew up as Alexis Manigo - in Walterboro, South Carolina, until her arrest in 2017.

It wasn't until Manigo failed to get a drivers licence because she didn't have a birth certificate or security card that Williams told her the truth.

"I know I wronged you and I'm so sorry", she said, apologizing to Kamiyah and her biological mother.

According to news reports, Kamiyah did not attend Friday's sentencing hearing. At that time, she chose not to sit with her birth parents nor the many people from SC whom she still continues to view as family. "We can only ask that everyone respect her privacy, give her time to take things in, and continue to pray for the well-being of each and every person whose life has been touched by this nearly 20-year chain of events". In 1998 she became pregnant and said she believed the new child would heal the relationship between her and her partner. "My feelings toward my mother will never change". The state had asked for 22 years in prison, the maximum under a prearranged sentence agreement.

"There are no winners and no losers in this case", Fourth Judicial Circuit Judge Marianne Aho said before imposing the sentence, CNN affiliate WJXT reported.

"This young woman was abducted as a newborn, and she is going to need time and assistance to process all this", Williams said.

In the 1½ years that Aiken has known where his daughter ended up, he has worked hard to build a relationship with her. I am your mother Kamiyah! "At this time I chose to remain focused on mending my family together in this situation". Despite today's sentence I would like to deal with the emotional toll this ordeal has taken on my family. Williams also waived her right to appeal the sentence. Shanara Mobley thought the woman was a hospital caregiver.

"I just want to thank God", Velma Aiken said.
