G7 divides to G6 plus Trump over trade war threat

10 June 2018

PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he "will not be pushed around".

Leaders of the G7 appeared to have agreed on a final communique at the end of a contentious two-day summit in Canada on Saturday, before US President Donald Trump lashed out at Canada and created further uncertainty over trade.

Calling out one of America's closest allies by name, Trump accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of making "false statements" during a presser after his departure.

Mr. Trump addressed the subject of worldwide trade during an impromptu news conference at the summit on Saturday, saying that he does not want to see other countries take advantage of the United States over trade.

A later statement, released by a member Mr Trudeau's communications team on Twitter, said there was nothing new in the Prime Minister's press conference.

Trump, who attended the day one of the summit pitched the idea of discarding all tariffs and trade barriers between the U.S. and its G-7 allies. "Very dishonest and weak", Trump said.

"I said very simply that it is not something we are even remotely interested or looking at this time to have Russian Federation returned to the G7", Trudeau said at the press conference following the two-day summit".

Mrs May said: "Where we disagree with our allies on something it is right that we say so and air the issue openly and frankly".

"So you go tariff-free, you go subsidy-free ... now I did suggest and I guess they are going to go back to the drawing board and check it out", he said.

During an evening stroll with his wife and another couple, Trudeau was asked a couple of times by a reporter for his reaction to Trump's tweets.

US President Donald Trump has left following his brief trip to Canada saying his relationship with the G7 countries is a 10 out of 10, and reports of rifts between the powerful countries are simply "fake news".

"The president will continue to say what he says".

Trudeau said Canada wasn't backing down.

The US president is en route to Singapore for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which Trump described as a "mission of peace".

He said he didn't blame the other world leaders, saying their countries struck good deals at America's expense, and said he blamed previous USA presidents.

"We had extremely productive discussions on the need to have fair and reciprocal" trade, he said.

Russian Federation was suspended in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

Vice President Mike Pence told Trudeau he would have to agree to that before Trump would agree to meet him. The noise of Mr Trump's helicopter landing was so loud they had to stop talking for a while, in a scene one official compared to the opening from the United States television series M.A.S.H.
