Porsche Taycan: Mission E's production name revealed, here in 2020

09 June 2018

As we previously reported, Porsche's first electric vehicle will feature two motors contributing to a system output of more than 600 horsepower.

Porsche says that "Taycan" means the equivalent of "spirited young horse", which is a reference to what lies at the heart of the Porsche crest.

The Taycan has been dubbed the "Tesla-slayer" by some automotive journalists. Its two electric motors will produce a net output in excess of 600 horsepower, and it'll hit 60 miles per hour in less than 3.5 seconds.

Though Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine already took a crack at it, and a small cadre of the automotive press got to drive a prototype a few miles at low speed to tease the powertrain, the Mission E electric sport sedan continues to move at a tantalizingly slow pace toward reality.

The Taycan is the start of a broader electrification strategy at Porsche. The electric 4-door is to spearhead Porsche's long-term electrification plans, with a range of plug-in hybrids and full EVs set to join it in the future. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume told us: "We will think of different options and there will be more than one, with different levels of power".

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood adds three new characters
Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood just added another Tinseltown legend. Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they no longer recognize.

Porsche has also shown a Mission E Cross Turismo concept, a wagon version of the electric vehicle. Porsche is investing more than $1 billion to produce the Taycan, which will enter production by the end of 2019.

Porsche on Friday introduced the official name of its battery electric vehicle as part of a ceremony in Europe marking 70 years of Porsche sports cars.

The central location of the batteries and twin-motor set-up will also give the car's technical architecture a better front-rear weight balance than combustion-engined cars, potentially allowing Porsche's engineers to soften the car's anti-roll bars to aid ride without hindering handling.

The Porsche Taycan will debut the company's 800-volt charging system called Porsche Turbo Charging that offers ultra-fast charging.

Porsche is talking about a 800-volt system that should allow a charge rate of up to 350 kW, which could charge the vehicle up to 80% in only 15 minutes.
