Rashford scores stunner as England ease past Costa Rica

08 June 2018

England and Costa Rica's World Cup squads are at full strength with no fresh injuries to either side.

In a quiet first half, England controlled the possession in the opening exchanges.

And for the first time since May 2016, an England home game had an atmosphere!

Elland Road has been the home of Leeds United since the club's foundation in 1919, with a capacity of 37,890.

Compare that to the drab audiences that have played Wembley throughout the years and the potential sale of the stadium to Fulham and Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan can not come soon enough.

Southgate made 10 changes to his starting XI, with the likes of Rashford, Fabian Delph and Danny Rose all catching the eye, ahead of England's World Cup opener against Tunisia.

Love it when England play at different grounds.

It was just reward for a fine first-half performance but England lost some of their rhythm after the break, as Southgate made a number of changes, including handing goalkeeper Nick Pope his first taste of worldwide football. The Three Lions played Costa Rica in Group D of the 2014 tournament in Brazil, floundering to a 0-0 draw, having already been eliminated thanks to losses against Uruguay and Italy.

Arjun Tendulkar Selected In India U-19 Squad For Sri Lanka Squad
The team selection was done by Aashish Kapoor, Gyanendra Pandey and Rakesh Parikh who are India's selectors at the U-19 level. Arjun was a part of the Mumbai U19 squad a year ago in the Cooch Behar Trophy where he impressed with 18 wickets.

Jamie Vardy is another who may fall foul of Southgate's tactical preferences.

"I just tried to play free and enjoy myself".

The temptation of the heavy plus money with Costa Rica is tempting considering it only takes one bounce for the ball to end up in the back of the net and it may only take one goal to win this match.

"You work on them (goals) in training every day and when one comes up in a game it's a reward", Rashford told ITV.

Gareth Southgate's men begin their World Cup campaign against Tunisia in Volgograd on June 18, a game you can hear live on talkSPORT.

The Clarets No.1 has yet to make his global bow and, unless he comes off the bench at Elland Road, seems set to travel to Russian Federation uncapped as England's third choice.

All three of England's goalkeepers are rather inexperienced at worldwide level going into the tournament - they have won just 10 caps between them.

And in goal, Navas, a Champions League victor just 12 days ago, was beaten by a Rashford shot he really should have done better with.
