08 June 2018

Movie theatres are decked up with cutouts and Posters of Rajinikanth and his film Kaala film.

On the otherside, Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy requested the makers of Rajinikanth's Kaala not to release it in the state in "this kind of atmosphere". They were reopened in April and American superhero movie "Black Panther" became the first movie to be screened in the kingdom in decades. Pa Ranjith has directed this film. "Kaala is a first in Rajinikanth's robust film career in the last decade or two", said Gowthaman. Let's not forget, this is the Ramzan week and a sizable chunk of the audience likes to refrain from watching films during this period even if it is Rajini sir's film. It looks like a 1990's film.

Whether in support of the protest or not - theatres which had earlier planned to screen the film, did not do so in the morning, leading to disappointment for Rajinikanth's die-hard fans in the city of his birth, Bengaluru.

But there were fans who took a different view.

Single screen theatres and multiplexes across Karnataka on Thursday avoided screening the multi-lingual "Kaala" amid vociferous protests by pro-Kannada activists against his remarks on the Cauvery river water issue."We are unable to screen Kaala for the time being despite the security provided due to strong protests against its release by the Kannada Rakshana Vedike (KRV) activists outside", a multiplex official said.

Pro-Kannada organisations continued to protest against the handful of multiplex that did decide to screen the movie. It is heard that the theatrical and music rights of Kaala (in all languages) worldwide sold over Rs. 230 Cr. Our honour and Kannada pride are at stake.

Rakesh Gowthaman, managing director at Vettri Theatre in Chennai, said the film pales in comparison to the Tamil superstar's previous movies. "But we hope they have some great story to be shared which may be liked and the film does well", said Mohan.
