Students and Resource Officer Praised After School Shooting Incident

DIXON, Ill. (WIFR) - Dixon High School says students are being bused from The Armory to Al Morrison baseball field. Dixon is situated about 100 miles west of Chicago, Illinois.

One student who was present when the shooting broke out described his experience. Sounds like firecrackers, and then there's dead silence.

Police Chief Steven Howell Jr. said several shots were fired near the auditorium, and Dallas rushed to the area to confront the gunman. No one else was hurt.

The gunman was in custody Wednesday with non-life-threatening injuries. He is expected to recover.

Howell noted that when police arrived at the scene, students and teachers were found barricaded in their classrooms, blocking doors with desks and bookshelves.

"We can not delay in enacting effective laws to keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them". The NRA's plan of putting armed police officers in schools seems to have worked in preventing a tragedy. They have been going through training on what to do during an active-shooter situation. She said they did not have guns at their home.

"You see all of these shootings and all of a sudden it's here in your town", said Barabra Harney.

"Dr. Grady, our principal, ran out and said "get out of here, go" and then we heard there was a live shooter", said Dusti Batsch.

Howell commended the officer for his quick response. I think everyone did an unbelievable job of following directions and doing what they had to do. "Some people did. They started crying as they were running". "I feel like Mr. McKay is a hero".

Danny Langloss, Dixon City Manager tweeted "So grateful for the heroic actions of the Dixon police officer who stopped the armed gunman at Dixon high school".

"When shots rang out in the hallway in the school, he charged towards the suspect and confronted him head-on".

"In addition to that, we need to take a look at what happened at the school", he said. Dixon Mayor Liandri Arellano Jr. commended the officer for his actions.

Police did not name the suspect or school resource officer involved in the incident. "A lot of things went right today when a great many of them could have (gone) wrong", he said.

It could have been so much worse. Bond was set for $2.0 million even though Milby was still in the hospital till Wednesday night.

Empen said she could not provide further details because of school privacy laws.

He was even beaten up in school in October 2017. "Thank god they didn't kill him. Thank God he don't kill anyone", said Julie Milby, the shooter's mother.

Senior Tyler Adcock, 17, also has known Milby since middle school, "I never really talked to him in the last two years, but he never seemed malicious".

Dixon High was evacuated, Peoria Avenue was closed and all Dixon schools were put on lockdown. "I mean a lot of kids steal from him, a lot of kids that have known him all his life".
