17 May 2018

There's no doubt in the fact that our city lovely Chandigarh is also one of the cleanest city in the country as per 2018 survey by bagging the 3rd spot. While Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) bagged the award for waste management, which includes segregation of waste and transportation from household to Jawaharnagar dumping yard and recycling it, the rank of the city for cleanliness has not been released yet. One of their other unique experiments included installation of a huge Radio at Roshanpura square. Bhopal has been ranked second and Chandigarh third in the survey at the national level.

This time, the Union Ministry of Urban Development survey was conducted in 4,200 cities, covering a population of 40 crore.

While a lot of work went in to becoming the cleanest cities in 2017, a lot more work went in to retaining these rankings in 2018, especially since other cities became serious about the competition.

The names of the worst performing cities would be announced on the day the awards would be presented, Puri said. Jharkhand's Ranchi was the best state capital as per citizen's feedback, while Goa's Panaji had the best innovation and practices. It is the top 3 cities that matter the most in every year's Swachh Survekshan survey.

It can spread rapidly through contact with small amounts of bodily fluid and its early flu-like symptoms are not always obvious. The WHO said the risk of the disease spreading was "high" and announced it was preparing for the "worst case scenario".

The awards were announced by Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). Compared to the previous surveys, this year's exercise allocated substantial weightage to the feedback from citizens based on their daily experience. The civic body had focused on ODF status for which along with public toilets, modular toilets were also placed across the city.

In the category of cities with less than 0.1 million population, the cleanest city was Bhadson (Punjab) in the north zone, Bundu (Jharkhand) in the east zone, Kakching (Manipur) in the north east zone, Siddipet (Telangana) in the south zone, and Panchgani (Maharashtra) in the west zone.

Contrary to the expectations and much to the disappointment of the denizens of the city, port city Vizag has failed to maintain its ranking in the Swachh Survekshan for 2018. Garbage collection was one such factor.
