Facebook introduces voice posts, story archive options for users in India

Facebook tested voice clips as Status Updates back in March, but now the company chose to bring the voice feature to Stories, instead of News Feed.

"It is common for people in India to share devices...people have told us they want to save their photos to a more personal space that is tied to their identity and not just the device they are using", said Connor Hayes, Director of Product Management, Facebook.

Facebook on Wednesday announced three new features keeping in mind the usage pattern of Indian users.

The most interesting feature is the Cloud Storage for photos and videos taken with the in-built Facebook camera app. With this, people will now be able to save the photos and videos they capture through the Facebook camera, where only they can see them when they log into their Facebook account.

Facebook Stories is getting some new features, including the option to Save Stories.

Sharing audio on Facebook stories. As the name suggests, this feature allows you to share a moment without having to share a photo or video. You can also archive Stories privately in your account. But now Facebook is expanding its creative work ground by enabling people share voice posts on its platform. The Voice Post feature will let Facebook users to quickly exchange audio-only messages with one each other as opposed to the regular text messages. Camera-shy people or users with a poor quality camera wouldn't share as many videos as expected. The new features will be available first in India, home to some 27o million users, before being made available to everyone else in the world, TheVerge reported yesterday. He adds that "Voice posts give people a new medium through which to express themselves". If users want, they can choose to not save them.

The voice post feature is limited to 20 seconds.

It means that users don't have to type to upload a voice post, making it easier than ever to upload to Facebook Stories.

Facebook hasn't released any user numbers for its Stories product, which launched in mid-2017, beyond saying that the figures are "encouraging".

You'll need to tap the Archive button (looks like a small clock) that is located in the Stories section above your News Feed. Under this feature, the stories are archived after they disappear after 24 hours. However, the social media giant will roll out the feature on its Android app in the coming months but there is no word on the availability on its iOS app.
