Portuguese club Sporting on Tuesday condemned "acts of vandalism and aggression" after forward Bas Dost was injured when a group of hooded supporters, armed with sticks and belts, attacked players and staff at the club's training complex.

"Sporting is not this, Sporting can not be this", said the club statement.

Portuguese television channel RTP said that around 50 intruders, who had covered their faces to avoid being identified, interrupted team practice and assaulted a number of players and staff. The changing room was heavily damaged.

Sporting Lisbon have chose to "honour their status as professionals" and play the Portuguese Cup final on Sunday, despite being viscously attacked by their own fans this week. The assailants were labelled "criminals, not football fans" by the Portuguese league.

Sporting missed out on a Champions League berth for next season after a loss in the last round of the Portuguese league cost it a second-place finish last weekend.
